Although the company claims the match is a publicity stunt, the owner of the company has said, “one of our greatest hopes as a company is establishing a branch in Pyongyang,” the capital of North Korea.

As for the girl who was selected, this was her response to the news:

“I felt proud to be selected. I thought, ‘Cool. It means you’re in the elite.’ If he was South Korean, he’d be in the top 1 percent of the men.”

I wonder if she thinks it would be “cool” to be married to the son of one of the world’s most monstrous tyrants?

Norman Bethune still revered in China.

70 years after Canadian doctor, humanitarian and medical inventor, Norman Bethune, died in China while volunteering as a battlefield surgeon, he is still one of the most respected foreigners in modern Chinese history.

In a recent speech, one of the most powerful and respected politicians in China, Bo Xilai, the Secretary of the CPC Committee of Chongqing, the largest municipality in the world in terms of land area and population (over 31 million), quoted a famous essay by Chairman Mao entitled “In Memory of Norman Bethune”. From memory he recited passages like:

What kind of spirit is this that makes a foreigner selflessly adopt the cause of the Chinese people’s liberation as his own? It is the spirit of internationalism, the spirit of communism, from which every Chinese Communist must learn.

Bo was awarding a group of doctors from Chongqing, and with his recitation he presented them with a statue of Bethune.

Mao’s essay, “In Memory of Norman Bethune”, is a mandatory part of the school curriculum in China and all students are required to memorize it. As such, whenever Chinese people meet a Canadian, they all invariably mention Norman Bethune. Ironically, a much lower percentage of Canadians know who he is.

According to National Geographic the most typical human being on...

According to National Geographic the most typical human being on earth is a 28-year-old Han Chinese male. There are 9 million of them. Not surprisingly, China scores the top spot for both nationality (19% of people are Han Chinese) and language (13% of people speak Mandarin as their first language).

JR is an incredible French Street Artist who we have been...

JR is an incredible French Street Artist who we have been following for years.
It doesn’t get more Orwellian than this. Beijing authorities will soon be able to track the movements and precise location of every cellphone user in the city (that’s 17 million people!). Ostensibly to prevent traffic congestion, the government will send text messages to people who are in overcrowded areas and suggest alternative routes. Of course, this technology is also useful for detecting the formation of protests, which the government is terrified of, especially after the eruption of recent unrest across the Middle East.

The thought of the government knowing and tracking the every move of millions of people is disconcerting in the extreme…oh, and since people must be registered with the authorities to activate their cellphones, the government will not only know where they are at all times but WHO they are as well! For those in Beijing who want to continue to avail themselves of this basic and indispensable communication technology, kiss your privacy goodbye!!

Dr. Seuss a racist??

Dr. Seuss, the famed author of children’s books loved by millions of children for generations was also a stridently Anti-Japanese racist. He drew this cartoon in February 1942, a few weeks before the US government started putting Japanese Americans in internment camps. Click on the image to see more of his political propaganda work from this period. Some of it is pretty racist, all is anti-fascist.

Pizza in Pyongyang

A humorous short film produced by South Korean artist Kim Hwang about a North Korean woman who makes pizza in her flat in Pyongyang. Inspired by the first and the only pizzeria in North Korea, which opened in December 2008 in Pyongyang at the orders of Kim Jong-il, this film is meant to poke fun at the absurdity of such a Western style restaurant in a country reliant on international food aid while being so isolated from the international community.

Kim shot the short with the help of 10 North Korean defectors and labeled it “Star Pizza.” He flew to the city of Dandong, China, which borders North Korea, in June 2010 with 500 copies of the DVD and distributed 100 each to five Korean Chinese who regularly visit Pyongyang. They circulated the DVD in the black market in the city.

A month later, Kim received an e-mail with a video clip showing North Koreans making pizza and singing a North Korean popular song with accordion accompaniment. He also received pictures of people with the DVD, pizzas they made, and messages like “We enjoyed the pizzas.” Kim will release a compilation of the entire project in April under the title “Pizza for the People.”

A Chinese mother films her naked 26 year old daughter and posts...

A Chinese mother films her naked 26 year old daughter and posts it on the internet in hopes of finding her a mate. The young woman is apparently even a model and actress, which makes this bizarre act of desperation all the more surprising, especially in a country where the male population is estimated to be 20% larger than the female population due to a cultural preference for male offspring.

While lying naked on a bed covered by a towel the daughter says: “Hello, I am Gan Lulu. To this day, I haven’t had a boyfriend, and it isn’t because I am too ugly, but unfortunately no one wants me, so what to do? So now i am seeking a prospective marriage partner. No matter whether or not you guys think I am special or not, I am actually a rather distinctive person. I am not that annoying, so I don’t believe that there really is no one who wants me.”

It appears that a Chinese TV news report about the Chinese Air Force has used a clip from the American movie Top Gun in an attempt to pass it off as real footage of a “Chinese” fighter jet shooting down an enemy aircraft. The clip in question begins at 1:13. Copyright infringement of Hollywood films is rampant in China but this is a particularly unique and embarrassing example.
